Citadel of Saladin > Mosque of Muhammad Ali > Mosque of Ibn Tulun > Mosque of Sultan Hassan

Begin your day tour with a visit to the Citadel of Saladin, a medieval fortress perched atop Mokattam Hill. Here, you'll explore the stunning Alabaster Mosque of Muhammad Ali, built by the founder of Egypt’s royal family. Your private guide will introduce you to the fundamental beliefs of Islam and explain the purpose of each architectural element within the mosque.

The mosque was designed by a Turkish architect inspired by Istanbul’s Blue Mosque. Built between 1830 and 1848, it is clad in alabaster from the inside and out. As you step outside, enjoy a panoramic view of Cairo—on clear days, you may even catch a glimpse of the iconic Giza Pyramids in the distance.

Next, visit the Mosque of Ibn Tulun, one of the oldest and largest mosques in Egypt. Construction began in 876 AD and was completed in just three years using red bricks—a material commonly used during the Abbasid era. Admire its beautiful architecture and rare spiral minaret, the only one of its kind in Egypt, modeled after those in Samarra, Iraq. Climb the minaret for stunning views of the open courtyard and the city beyond.

The mosque also features exquisite stucco decorations along its arches—the first known use of this material in Cairo. Your guide will share the mosque’s history and answer any questions you may have.

Finally, end your tour at the awe-inspiring Mosque of Sultan Hassan, described by a famous Arab traveler as the pride of Islamic architecture, akin to the Pharaohs’ pride in the pyramids. Construction began in 1356 and was completed in 1361, during the Mamluk period. The mosque, named after Sultan Hassan of the Qalawoon dynasty, is considered one of the greatest Islamic monuments in Cairo—and indeed, in all of Egypt.

Your guide will walk you through its architectural wonders, including the mosque, the madrasa (Islamic school), and the mausoleum, offering insight into the religious, educational, and cultural significance of the complex.
